Kathy Patterson Outstanding Advisor Award
In Fall 2024, the AGS Outstanding Advisor Award was renamed in honor of Kathy Patterson for her years of service to Alpha Gamma Sigma as an advisor and honors program advocate. Alpha Gamma Sigma, Inc. awards advisors each spring who have been nominated by their students for their extraordinary service to their chapter.
Kathy grew up in Orange, CA. She received her BA and MA in English from CSU Fullerton. After receiving her MA, she began her Ph.D. studies at UCR where she studied English literature with a focus on Shakespeare and late 15th/early 16th century British literature. She left the Ph.D. program after several years (ABD) to teach English full-time at SAC in 1996. In 2000, Kathy became the Honors Transfer Program Coordinator and continued in that role until she retired in 2024. During her 29 years with SAC, she served as Humanities Curriculum Chair and advisor for Alpha Gamma Sigma, Omicron Chapter earning Advisor of the Year twice. While she was the advisor for Santa Ana College’s AGS chapter had an impressive 10-year scholarship streak. She was recognized as Advisor of the Year by both her campus’s ICC and AGS. In 2006 she was awarded the Distinguished Faculty Award at Santa Ana College.
Kathy was a tireless advocate for students, and she loved being a teacher. She wasn’t just a teacher while she was on campus; she was always thinking about how best to serve her students. The Outstanding Advisor Award is now given to those who carry on the legacy of going above and beyond to support honors students in both academics and community service.
